about

Around Christmas of 2015 I presented an idea for a senior capstone to my advisor as part of my bachelor’s degree at Western Oregon University. I wanted to explore the relationship between the physical and human environment and music — between geography and the humanities. A significant portion of the project ended up being a report that talked about Dylan and Sufjan and Woody Guthrie and the way they all draw from their surroundings to make recordings.

A smaller aspect of the project entailed creating my own place-based suite of original songs. I hurried to finish writing and recording a set of four compositions that the geography faculty at WOU would okay so that I could move on to grad school in the fall of 2016. Since then, I’ve become very busy with school and am just now getting around to releasing the album to you all. It’s somewhat lo-fi and a little rough around the edges, but I hope you enjoy

This album was created as part of a senior capstone for a geography degree at Western Oregon University.

It was written, produced, mixed, and engineered by Brandon Pike.

Austin Kearney also did mixing and engineering on some tracks.

It was recorded at Brandon’s house in South Central Salem, in Austin’s basement in the country in Oregon City, and on site in various other places in the Willamette Valley.

Brandon sang, played guitar and synthesizer, clapped his hands, and used his laptop to make these sounds.
Austin played guitar and synthesizer.

Brandon took the photos and created the artwork.

Thank you…
The geography faculty at WOU, specifically Dr. Sriram Khé and Dr. Shaun Huston, for encouraging me to do a creative project as my capstone, for advice, and for believing it to be a worthwhile exercise.
Laura, for letting me turn our loft into a recording studio at various times over the last couple years, and for encouraging me to both play music and pursue an education.
Austin, for brainstorming ideas and devoting time and effort into this project.
